The “Young Kichwa Defenders of the Forest”, from the Sachawaysa community, would like to build a community nursery for native fruit, nut and palm trees. These trees would be used to reforest significant “greenfield” pasture areas. Construction supplies include, sand, buckets, wheelbarrows, cement, level, nails, doors, zinc sheets, roof netting and cement blocks ranging in price from $.25 to $100 per item. Work items include a chain saw, weed eaters, shovels, rakes, post diggers, buckets, nursery bags, machetes, soil, measuring tape and nylon cord ranging in price from $1 - $800 (chain saw). Individual items include hats, gloves, boots, vests, backpacks and rain ponchos ranging in price from $3 to $18 per item. About 70% of the Kichwa families are suffering from malnutrition, with many eating only once a day and not eating fruits. Many of the species to be planted are considered superfoods which will have a tremendous impact on the nutrition options available. Associated organization: Yakum Foundation.
