Recently there has been an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Altai Sum, a remote village in the far west of Mongolia. This region is characterized by extreme poverty and harsh living conditions. Most residents are nomadic herders who depend on livestock for their livelihood. The livestock provides milk, meat, wool, dried dung (for fuel) and income. The government is culling the herds. For many families this has resulted in the loss of most of their livestock. The cows will be purchased from disease-free areas and will have veterinary inspections and health certification before they are distributed to families. Associated organization: Heart of Mongolia.
