In Nasarawa, Nigeria, a region experiencing armed conflict and extreme poverty, starvation is the leading cause of death of young children. The women at Bright Minds Africa, https://www.brightmindsafrica.org, purchase locally grown peanuts, roast them by hand, grind and mix them with powdered milk, add powdered leaves from moringa trees they cultivate (high in vitamin A, C, calcium, potassium and iron) and package the emergency therapeutic food in one-dose containers. They identify severely malnourished children in their communities and provide them with therapeutic food and follow-up. Most children reach a healthy weight within 8 weeks of treatment (30 doses), retain the weight gained and make it through the first 5 critical years of life. All funds raised by Lantern Projects will be matched.
