newborn baby with auditory testing equipment attached

The test for newborns is called ABR (auditory brainstem responses). Each ear is stimulated with sounds and surface electrodes are used to detect any neural signals traveling from the cochlea in the inner ear along the auditory nerve and up to the brain. By gradually reducing the size of the sound stimulus, they can determine the level at which the ear no longer responds. If a hearing loss is detected, hearing aids can be fitted. An estimated 6,000 school children and 1,000 babies per year will be helped.
